Finding a job with your resume blog in a social media world

Posted by Francois Muscat On July - 27 - 2010

A resume blog can be a great way to publish your portfolio to the widest group of employers online. Your resume blog can help you so that employers can find you instead of traditional job searching methods like searching through crowded job boards and job newspapers.

Anyway you look at it, Web 2.0 is all about broadcasting and sharing your message to the world where others can engage and interact with you. What better way to find the perfect job by using social media tools available to anyone. By using Web 2.0 tools to create a resume blog, you can broadcast your personal message to the whole world.

Information available to anyone

The information you present on your resume blog will be scooped up by the search engines and it will become available on blog aggregators, search engines and other social media channels. This can increase your chances that an employer might randomly browse your resume blog when they are looking for a key employee.

Resume blogging tips

  • Which platform? Free hosted blogging solutions are the easiest to start and launch. There’s many free hosted blogging servers available such as WordPress.com or blogger.com.
  • Design: Pick a design template that is clean, professional and unique. The design that you choose will give an important first impression. Most of the free hosted blogging solutions provides a way where you can customize the design to a certain extent to fit in with the theme and topic that you choose for your blog.
  • Speciality: Identify your speciality. Research and come up with a catchy tagline and include this in the top banner.
  • About you: Include an “about me” page on your resume blog. Include a photo and a brief description about yourself and your viewpoints on the about me page. Tell your story in an informal style so that you can brand yourself. Include the ways on how people can contact you.
  • Resume: Include a printable PDF version of your resume that readers can download. Make it easy for your visitors to read more about you.
  • Testimonials: This can allow your readers to talk about you and it is more compelling than you saying these things. Always use testimonials in lieu of posting references.
  • Blog postings: This is the heart of your blog. What are you going to write about? You can write stories about your skills, education, career stories, work experience, projects you are working on, achievements, etc. By writing these stories, you are broadcasting your skills to the blogosphere.
